FAQ 279Remote Desktop

So you want to access your Waisman PC when out of the Waisman Center? Windows XP offers a solution for your issue called Remote Desktop.
So What is Remote Desktop?
Remote Desktop allows you to connect to your Waisman computer across the Internet from virtually any computer; your home pc or any laptop with an internet connection. Once connected, Remote Desktop gives you mouse and keyboard control over your computer while showing you everything that's happening on the screen. With Remote Desktop, you can leave your computer at the office without losing access to your files, applications, and e-mail. You are also able to connect to your Waisman network drives. Its like sitting in front of your work computer!
Step 1: Get Authorized to use Remote Desktop on your Office PC
In order to use Remote Desktop, computing services needs to authorize you to do so. We limit access so others can't use your PC, this helps keep your data secure.

Please Authorize Me for Remote Desktop
Step 2: Downloading the VPN Client
Next you will need to download the VPN Client from the DoIT Website onto the PC you will be using to access your Waisman PC.

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) lets you use your remote connection as though you were still on campus. It is a secure path to our network that allows you to work from a computer outside the Waisman Center. The Waisman firewall blocks Remote Desktop connection attempts that are not carried on a secure VPN connection.

VPN Client Download

NOTE* In order to use Remote Desktop you will need to establish a VPN connection first. Go to START ALL PROGRAMS and then CISCO SYSTEMS VPN Pack. CLICK on the ON CAMPUS selelction and the CONNECT button (in the upper right hand corner) You will log on using your Campus NetID and Password to connect to the VPN server, not your Waisman credentials.

Step 3: Your First Connection
Remote Desktop can be a bit difficult to locate from your desktop. Go to START, ALL PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, then REMOTE DESKTOP CONNECTION

If you cannot find it there, simply find the "WINDOWS" key on your keyboard, hold it down, and press the "R" key. Then type "MSTSC".
Entering Your PC Name
When you first open Remote Desktop, a window will pop up that asks for your PC name. This can be tricky to find, but the easiest way is to double-click on the MY COMPUTER icon and the name will be listed under HARD DISK DRIVES. You should collect this information from your Office PC before you go home...

for example:

SAGRA (C:) Local Disk

Here, SAGRA is your computer name. So you would enter:

In entering it this way, it tells remote desktop that your PC name is Sagra and its located in the Waisman Center at UW Madison.

How to Configure Remote Desktop-Step 1

Also make sure the box is checked to "Reconnect if connection is dropped".

The final step for using Remote Desktop is to enter your Waisman Username and Password, just like you are in front of your PC. If you are logging into a Windows 7 Machine, your user name for login will be
