Health Information Privacy Training (HIPAA)

Students/Trainees in clinical training programs of the University of Wisconsin-Madison are required to learn about the health information privacy requirements of a federal law called HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). When you are at a health care facility for clinical training, you are covered by the Privacy Rule as a member of that facility's workforce. Detailed information is available on the University of Wisconsin‐Madison HIPAA homepage.

HIPAA Training needs to be completed annually by all students who will come into contact with protected health information. Your preceptor will assure that you are enrolled in the HIPAA training at the Learn@UW site. All enrolled students will receive email notification from Learn@UW once the training is available. Once you have completed the training, you will need to print the training certificate and turn it into your preceptor with your other on-boarding documents.
