How do I prepare for college now?

Students Outside

Okay, so college is something you want to shoot for...now how do you get ready? There are a number of things you can do to prepare. If possible, start early. While it's never too late to consider college, the earlier you begin planning, the more time you will have to prepare. Talk to your family about what's right for you.

First, try to learn and experience as much as possible in high school.

  • Take general education classes as much as you can. You will be challenged to work hard and you will learn along with your classmates without disabilities.
  • Work with your teachers to find and keep a job. By having a job, you'll get ideas about what type of work you'd like to have one day. You'll gain independence, and you'll earn money!! Check out the "On the Job" booklet for stories about other students' work experiences.

Second, think about why you want to go to college and what you'd like to gain.

  • Do you want to take a class during your transition program through your school district?
  • Do you want to go to college after you're done with public school services?
  • Do you have a career path in mind? Are there certain classes you should take to prepare for that job?
  • Do you want to take a class related to a hobby or an interest?
  • Student Advocating For Herself
  • Check out the College Search database on the Think College website to see what types of options exist. There may not be a lot of options in Wisconsin close to where you live. You, your family, and your team may need to start talking with the colleges in your area to explore options.

Finally, become an advocate for yourself. In college you will have to speak up for yourself more. In high school you can work on being an advocate by:

  • leading your own IEP meetings.
  • talking to your teachers about accommodations you need. Ask your case manager or special education teacher to practice with you.
  • working through tough situations with other students, like asking someone to turn down their music if it's too loud.

Check out the "Advice from College Students" section on the Think College website. This section includes information on how college is different from high school and strategies to be successful.
